Technicare has closed. As many of you know by now, Technicare has closed its doors in Winnipeg, leaving a major void for local photographers who need processing services, albums, mounting and many other services.

Photo Central is happy to announce that we will be adding a number of the products and services previously provided by Technicare. We have already added one member of Technicare’s production team to our staff, and are in process of installing various pieces of equipment and services.

We will keep you posted as our lineup develops. In the meantime, please let us know if you have any questions, or would like to offer your opinion on products you would like us to offer.

Regards,

Andrew Toews

I take thousands of pictures a year. Every image has a use.  I use them for photo albums and keepsakes for my family. Over half the pictures I take are of the family. I consider each of these to be valuable. This is why I back-up my photos to three different places.

I keep one copy on my computer, and I also back-up all of my photos to two external hard drives.  Storing one of the external drives at a different location ensures a final level of protection.

I would like to stress that last option; the external storage. Backing-up photos to an external hard drive is by far the cheapest, easiest and safest way to archive digital photos.

Let me explain why:
• External hard drives have become very cheap.
• In the event of an emergency, they can be easily saved.
• They require no technical knowledge to attach to a computer.
• They can be used and reused as long as you like with a one time investment.
• In the event of a computer failure, it doesn’t require hundreds of dollars to recover the images.

As I said, external hard drives offer the easiest method to back-up photos.  My external hard drive only had to be attached to my computer and configured once. Backing up photos to an external drive is truly set and forget.

Automating the process is very simple too.   Windows and Mac OS have built in back up functions. And many low cost software options exist that are easily configured.

One note of caution though, when shopping for an external drive don’t go cheap. Many of the cheap drives offer no motor head protection or shock absorption. This means a simple drop can easily destroy the hard drive. It is worth paying the little bit of extra money for a drive that can absorb any type of impact or has built in head parking features for a little peace of mind.  Speed is also a key component.  Be aware of the drive speed, 5200rpm is great for backup while the higher speed 7200rpm drives are better to work from.

Holday hours at Photo Central! We will be open from 9:00 to 8:00 Monday through Friday the week before Christmas (Dec 19-23), and from 9:00 to 4:00 on Christmas Eve. We will be closed for Christmas and Boxing Day. Normal hours resume on Tuesday, December 27th.

Do yourself and your family a favour this year: stay home on Boxing Day. As a family owned store, we feel it is important to take time off to be with those who are close to you. So forget the deals, forget the sales, and try to make a little bit more of the Christmas season this year. You will thank yourself for it in the long run!

Best wishes from all of us at Photo Central!

Christmas is right around the corner. You know what that means? Gifts!

The hustle and bustle of finding gifts can be a pain. I’ve often found something personal, maybe homemade, is often the most treasured item received in my family. People love pictures. May I suggest this, get those photos printed and turn them into a scrap book or photo album for a special someone?

Printed pictures can be one of the cheapest gifts a person can afford. But I must warn you, don’t just run off to any department or drugstore and have your precious memories mangled. Hire a professional printing service.

The cost difference between a professional printing service and Wal-Mart isn’t all that much. Professional printing services can offer photo touch ups, special packages and consultations to help really make those photos pop and get the best bang for the buck. Other places leave you to your own accord. Professionals use quality archival grade paper and ink that will last happily ever after. Department and drug stores use bottom grade resources to cut costs at an attempt to keep costs low. Photo printing services also calibrate printers regularly to ensure proper image reproduction.
Professional photo printing services can offer different types of printing material, like bamboo and canvas, and are not limited to 8×10 inch sizes. Personally, I think a large canvas printed family picture for grandma would be a gift she will adore forever. And what about Christmas cards? Most services can easily create personalized holiday cards from photos.
I would also recommend looking into these types of services for the rest of your holiday printing needs. Professional photo printing services can help to organize all of your pictures and create specialized photo albums that are truly amazing. Photos are precious memories that last more than a life time. It would be best to have them printed properly from the start rather than waste money down the road.

Between the earthquakes in Japan and the floods in Thailand, this has been a very hard year for the electronics industry.

Nikon’s factories were all but wiped out with still no word on when or if they will resume production. The shortage of Nikon cameras have made consumers run to purchasing Cannon and Sony branded cameras. This has caused similar shortages for these brands as well as major price hikes. Christmas presents may be a lot more expensive this year. But I have a suggestion.

Through trials and tribulations, we, ourselves, grow the most. Use this time of inventory shortage as a challenge to yourself. Learn to use the equipment you have more efficiently. Sometimes, the best picture isn’t taken with superb equipment, but rather superb skill.

Ask one of the experts at Photo Central for some tips and tricks. Than practice them yourself. Most camera shops don’t mind giving a few juicy tidbits of info now and then.

Better yet, sign up for our classes. If you sign up for lessons, they are obliged to spill their photography tricks and tips all over the table. Have the professionals teach you to use that camera better. The money you invest in a class will far outlast the money you invest in a camera.

If you are looking for that perfect Christmas present for a loved one, gift them with some knowledge. The new camera they wanted may be out of reach at the moment. Leave that idea for next year, or a birthday. Give them the gift of a few photography lessons. You might be very surprised what a few lessons can do.

My point is if you can’t get the camera you want now; learn how to use the one you got better.

I don’t believe it is a secret that cell phone camera modules have gotten much better, particularly on the iPhone.

The iPhone camera is often touted in reviews as having one of the best cell phone camera sensors. And certainly the image quality an iPhone can produce is not all that bad. But what if I were to challenge your beliefs that a good cell phone camera could not replace your point-and-shoot or DSLR? Here is why.
The size of the lens, and more importantly the sensor behind the lens, play a huge part of how the image will look. Basically, the larger the camera sensor, the easier a camera can record that image, and the better the image will look. When that sensor becomes really tiny, like a cell phone camera, all sorts of weird problems occur.
Cell phone cameras can cause problems like:
• Colour banding;
• Over colour saturation;
• Muted colours;
• Incorrect colours;
• Green or yellow tints;
• Under or over exposed photos;
• Blurring;
• And so much more.

Cell phone cameras are under heavy hardware restraints too. They don’t have the same focusing power, depth of field or aperture abilities like their digital camera brethren.

Digital cameras offer more robust features like:
• Larger f-stops;
• Better depth of field;
• High and lower ISO settings;
• Larger photos sizes;
• More focusing capabilities (like face detection, or multipoint detection);
• Better colour reproduction;
• Sharper and clearer images; and
• Better sensors to capture moving objects.
It may not be fun to carry an extra device. But I challenge you take a picture of a child in low light, like a lamp lit room, or at the next concert with an iPhone and a digital camera. See which device provides a nicer picture. Remember, not every day is going to be bright and sunny. Not every room has a lot of windows. And very seldom do little children ever sit still.

Most people will really enjoy Nikon and Cannon digital cameras. Whether you need something for family memories or you are a hobbyist, both Nikon and Cannon offer a wide range of products to meet any need.

Old photos can be restored easily at Photo Central

Once upon a time your grandmother and grandfather were a younger version of themselves. They had fun, dated, laughed and cried just as any other young couples would. They would preserve their memories with their photographs and letters.

These memories are often shared with families for generations to come. But memories are subject to the cruel hand of nature and time, sometimes destroying them. This would be the time to hire a professional to digitally restore photos and precious memories.

Digital photo restoration can preserve those precious memories for the rest of time. Not only can you keep the original and preserve it as necessary, you can also keep a digital copy that will last for generations to share. That copy will also allow you to reprint that image as needed. But how is it done and why should you hire a professional photo restoration service?

The process is rather simple but requires a fine eye and years of experience to master. The image that requires photo restoration is scanned into the computer. This scanner is capable of reading the image at a very high resolution and can save the photo in an original format without compression. The digital copy of the photo is than loaded into post processing software, like Photoshop or Gimp, and carefully stitched back together. The digital photo restoration service has to go through the photo pixel by pixel to add and remove information, fix colour markings, remove noise from the scanning process, fix water marks, adjust fading, correct colours, fix photo tearing and anything else that the years of wear and tear cause.

Here at Photo Central, we go through every pain staking measure during our photo restoration process to ensure that your precious memory appear as perfect as the day it was printed.
