Six Week Courses
Photography Fundamentals
Creative control of the SLR
Photography has long been a popular hobby. While the technology behind photography has radically changed, the fundamental principles remain the same. This course focuses on those fundamentals, stressing technique over technology.
Starting with exposure, students will learn first how to take technically sound images. As the technical end of exposure, focus, and the like are covered, a range of compositional subjects will be introduced to help create aesthetically pleasing images. By the end of the course, students should be able to rely less on luck and more on knowledge to craft images and realize their creative visions.
The majority of the course is taught in the Photo Central gallery at 499 Notre Dame, plus one field trip for hands-on practice. Core material covered includes composition, depth of field, perspective, macro photography, and more. The last night also includes an image critique of prints from the field trip. Extra time is included to answer specific questions of interest to the participants.
Participants should have access to a single-lens reflex camera (digital or film) or be looking at picking one up during the session to get the most out of the material. The cost of the course is $195.00 plus GST. Classes will start Saturday, May 26, 2012 at 10:00 am. Call now to reserve your seat!
Introduction to Lighting
The fine art of shaping light
The root of photography, literally, is writing with light. While most photographs are taken with whatever light happens to be available, many photographers move into modifying or controlling light to achieve their creative visions.
This course will introduce students to the fundamental concepts and terms of lighting theory. The principles covered are intended to be applicable in all lighting scenarios, be they studio or location, natural or artificial. The goal of the course is to endow students with an overall awareness of technique that will improve their ability to control and manipulate the lighting composition of all their photographs. Theory will be balanced with hands-on workshops to provide students with the opportunity to use what they have learned immediately.
The course will be taught primarily in the Photo Central gallery at 499 Notre Dame, giving students access to a range of lights, reflectors, and other materials. Core material covered includes the various properties of light, contrast ratio, key lighting, fill techniques, and more.
Students are not required to have any lighting equipment of their own to sign up for this class. However, due to the hands-on nature of the material, it is a good idea to own a camera with manual control over the shutter, aperture, and ISO. The cost of the course is $275.00 plus GST.
Classes will start Saturday, May 26, 2012 at 3:00 pm.

Introduction to Digital Workflow
What do I do with my images now?
The importance of work-flow in digital photography is difficult to understate when it comes to preserving and maximizing the quality of a well-exposed image, as proper shooting technique by no means guarantees a satisfactory print. Likewise, solid work-flow principles can salvage much from an image taken under less-than-optimal conditions. A good working knowledge of what is going on at each stage of the process will allow students to consistently produce the best images they can. In this course, students will be introduced to the methods, tools and concepts involved in achieving consistent, repeatable results when taking a digital image from the original capture, through editing, and finally to print.
If you are looking to get the most out of your camera, computer, scanner, and printer this class will give tools to process fantastic images. This class goes into detail about RAW processing, colour calibration, fine art printing and more.
The cost of the course is $225.00 plus GST.
Classes will start Saturday, May 26th at 12:30pm.
